Extension of a school complex in several stages

The school campus of Bürglen is located between Friedhofstrasse and Zeltlistrasse. Individual school buildings and the sports facilities, together with the castle, form an educational complex with great outdoor qualities and give the community a strong cultural identity. Our proposal for the development of school facilities intervenes selectively in the area and manages to preserve the existing qualities of the outdoor spaces despite the increased density.

The first construction phase for cycle 1 will be realized in the north-eastern part next to the school building "Zeltli". Facing it, under the existing hard playground, will be placed the  sports gymnasium (single field). The new double gymnasium replaces the existing gymnasium and creates synergies with the other new one and the all-weather pitch with a well-structured floor plan.

The extension for the secondary school ("cycle 3") will be placed opposite the existing building in the south-west area. The new building is designed as an extension and can still function autonomously. The building's layout creates a new courtyard typology for cycle 3 with minimal intervention in the existing building.

The special uses of cycle 2 will be accommodated in a two-story building next to the new courtyard-building. The building, located transversely to the extension of the secondary school, emphasizes the central axis of the school complex.

The new building for cycle 1 creates a spatial dialogue with the Zeltli school building. It continues its structural setting and defines the outdoor space for the children. Its central corridor extends the access axis of the Zeltli building and at the same time allows for a clear and simple organization of the rooms.

The two gymnasiums will be accessible with a similar concept: the central access connects both the main entrances on the ground floor and the first floor, as well as the sport courts with the hard playground outside. The basement of the existing gymnasium will be preserved and extended with a new row of cloakrooms, showers and toilets for the outdoor field users. The two gymnasiums can be built independently of each other. The single gym will be built underground; this solution allows the exterior playground to continue to be used without obstacles and in an uncomplicated way. The double gym will be built above the existing basement.

For the 3rd cycle, a new courtyard building is being constructed; the inner courtyard opens up to the school path with a green and lush atmosphere. Here, the learning landscapes have a residential character: each team owns a floor that can be accessed through separate entrances.  The spacious corridors are available as free play areas and can be used as extensions to the learning landscapes. They are also suitable for activities in small groups or as a place for spontaneous meetings.
