Refurbishment of an apartment for a young couple

Direct commission
Photographs: Angela Sorbaioli

The apartment for a young couple, located in the most lively and dynamic district of Valencia, enjoys the magnificent light that floods the whole city. The project reconfigures the main spaces and functions, partly modifying the original layout of the flat to adapt them to the habits of the clients.

The husband, passionate about cooking, uses his free time to prepare new recipes, while the wife, a PhD in odontology, makes the most of her spare time to deepen her research from the comfort of the sofa. For this reason it was very important to both of them that the kitchen and the living room were connected, allowing them to spend more time together. In order to meet the needs of the clients we chose to relocate the kitchen, traditionally oriented only to the inner light well of the building (a very common solution in the buildings of the 20's and 30's in this area).

We decided to place the kitchen in the room next to the living room and to combine both spaces by eliminating the dividing wall. Thus we create a continuous space, where the living room, dining room and kitchen have fluid transitions and benefit from better natural light conditions. This small gesture is emphasized by the design of a central island in the kitchen, which allows us to provide three fully functional spaces in which to meet, eat or work.

For the master bedroom, we converted a disused gallery into a bathroom. This way we gave meaning to a forgotten space and provided the client with an en suite bathroom. The rest of the house, including the existing bathroom, has been renovated with great attention to the budget and the original character of the house, with specific interventions and a careful choice of bright and warm materials.
